Living root bridge,Mawlynnong

“These bridges are not built, they are grown. And takes almost a decade or more to become strong and sturdy”

“In most places around the world, bridges are constructed using concrete and steel as the main building materials. Even in the epic Ramayana when Rama had to cross over to Lanka to save Sita, he built a bridge with mud and stone.”

The bridge is the main attraction of Mawlynnong village. We visited this place during the 2014 pujas.

The bridge is located 2 kms from the village. We had to descend almost 200 steps to reach the foot of the bridge. However tiredness gave way to wonder when we finally laid our eyes on it.

The only word that came to my mind was BEAUTIFUL…..
A Marvel Of Nature

This was the first time in my life that I crossed a stream by walking through a natural bridge.Standing under the bridge I felt really amazed and wondered how nature could be so beautiful.

I have never seen such a beautiful bridge in my life. There is a stream under the bridge which originates from a waterfall nearby. After so many days I heard the chirping of birds. It felt like I was becoming a part of nature.

History :

The Khasi people do not know when or how the tradition of living root bridges started. The earliest written record of Sohra’s (Cherrapunji’s) living root bridges is by Lieutenant Henry Yule, who expressed astonishment about them in the 1844 Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal.

“Nobody can discover the world for somebody else. Only when we discover it for ourselves does it become common ground and a common bond and we cease to be alone.”

– – Wendell Berry

Another attraction is a tree house known as “Sky View“. People climb on it for an aerial view of the entire landscape.

If you are lucky, then you can get the top view of Bangladesh; not so far from here.Majority of the people of Meghalaya are Christians and there is a beautiful Church with a Missionary.I conclude here and leave the rest to the readers to experience themselves, as I did.
