Elephant Falls, Shillong

Elephant Falls is among most popular tourist sites of the city in East Khasi Hills District. The waterfall is located in Upper Shillong area.We visited this place during the 2014 Pujas. There is no entry fees in Elephant Falls.

There is also a local souvenir market at the entrance that has a good collection of handicrafts. very nice.

As I reached the first fall, I was educated by a signboard that reads, ‘Why Elephant Falls?’

Elephant falls History :

The original Khasi name for the falls was ‘Ka kshaid lai pateng khohsiew’ (Three steps water falls), because of the fact that the water falls in three steps. Of course it was the British who named it ‘Elephant Falls’ because of a stone that resembles an elephant near the falls. But the stone was destroyed by an earthquake in 1897. But the name hasn’t changed.

The first fall is broad and hidden between trees.

“You sway Like my emotions You twinkle Into my eyes You give me warmth You make me shiver I look at you You are pellucid But within you There is beauty and life And without you The petals of my soul will stiffen and shrivel.”

The second fall is tamed and almost negligible, when the water level recedes.

“I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list.”

“One of the best”
The last and the third waterfall is the tallest. Elephant Falls is characterized by clear water flowing over dark jutting rocks with no particular forms. Really enjoyed with family. Be aware of slippery stairs! The sleep steps can be too much trouble for kids and elderly folks. The place is very well maintained and kept very clean.
