Sandakphu Diary, Kolkata to Tumling

All of us in our office wait patiently for December as this is the time of the year when we go out for our winter vacation – Sandakphu trek
This year we are traveling to Sandakphu.
Our countdown started 3 months prior to our journey when we booked our tickets.
At last that day arrived on the 24th of December. Our office colleagues (those who weren’t on the trip) came to the station to see us off.

So we hopped onto The Darjeeling Mail and reached NJP next morning.
We ate breakfast at a cafe adjacent to the station and setoff for Maneybhanjang( the last major village before Sandakphu)

It took us almost 6 hrs in a hired jeep to reach Maneybhanjang via Mirik.

After coming to Maneybhanjang we ate chicken momo.the food was delicious. Though after reaching to Siliguri weather was normal but after Maneybhanjang, the weather was changing & we were feeling cold.
We made a brief stop at Maneybhanjang for refreshments and hired a Land Rover jeep to take us through the treacherous mountain roads as road conditions do not allow for normal vehicles to move any further.

The roads were so terrible and cliff face was so steep that none of us had the courage to look outside the jeep. We were all huddled together, jumping and sliding on each other as the jeep went up the hill.
We stopped for tea at a place called Meghma, perfectly named as the place was engulfed in clouds.

After a backbreaking and heart wrenching 30 minutes we finally reached Tumling, Our base camp for Sandakphu. In Tumling we stayed at a place named Mountain lodge. After dinner we were excited about our next event which was in next morning at 4 am sunrise.
The weather in Tumling was almost below freezing point and the place gave us a deathly chill.
