Baijnath temple- A 12th Century Temple

The Baijnath temple is one of the most fascinating tourist attractions in India. The place where the temple is located happened to be the capital of the Katyuri Kings; their rule lasted for four centuries (7th century-11th century AD).

Location :-

From Bageshwar, Baijnath is 26 km away and from Kausani, it’s 17 km away. Kausani is known as Almora. From Kangra, its distance is 51 km.

Mythological background:-

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati at the junction where the Gomati river meets Garur Ganga. The impact of the mythology is so deep that the place inherited its name from the temple. The Katyuri kings had a great regard for all Hindu gods. Other than Shiva and Parvati, they placed the idols of Kuber, Surya, Ganesh and Bramha in the temples.

We enjoyed it

We visited this place during our Nainital trip. The first thing that caught our attention was the architecture of the temple. I found similarities between the temple’s architecture and that of Ajanta and Ellora. It was incredibly beautiful. The next best thing was the environment; it was tranquil and peaceful, perfectly ideal for a religious setting.

There are seventeen temples in Baijnath. Devotees visit the temples every day and bow down before the idols. We paid tribute to the deities and performed all the rituals. I am not sure whether I’ve earned any blessing, but I felt delighted to see the beauty of the idols.

The idols of Lord Shiva and Parvati are inside the main temple. Walking to the entrance of the main temple might take some time, but it’s worth it. Parvathi is behind Lord Shiva. There are small idols of twenty-six other deities sculpted in the Parvati idol. I never saw anything such as this before.

Lodging accommodation:-

The Uttarakhand Tourism guest house is the only place where you can rest and nest. That’s the only thing that disappointed me; there should’ve been other accommodations. But the disappointment was only a tad bit, I enjoyed my visit to Baijnath thoroughly, and came home with a redeeming experience
